Minnesota Wins First Playoff Series In Two Decades!
For the past two decades the Minnesota Timberwolves have been one of the most embarrassing franchises in the NBA. Before this season, since 2004 the Minnesota Timberwolves have only made the playoffs three times and failed to make it out the first-round each time. So much failure has been associated with the Timberwolves, up until the point a young player by the name of Anthony Edwards arrives on the scene. Edwards was drafted by the Timberwolves with the first overall pick in 2020 and as he has grown, he has shown that he will be the face of the league in the near future.
Heading into this Wolves-Suns first-round series, many believed the Suns had a chance to pull an upset given the three superstars they have in Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Also, the Suns went 3-0 against the Timberwolves in the regular season. The Suns had the tenth best offensive rating during the regular season but the Timberwolves had the overall best defensive rating. Theses teams are significantly different from one another and this series was suppose to be excellent to watch but instead it was embarrassing for the Phoenix Suns.
Minnesota proved that their defense was not some regular season fluke. The Suns went from averaging 116.2 points to 103.3 and went from shooting 49.3% from the field to 46.5%. The Suns also went from shooting 38.2% from three-point range to 36.5%. Minnesota put the clamps on the Suns' three superstars and their bench unit just wasn't good enough to prevail. After four games of the series the Minnesota Timberwolves have swept the Phoenix Suns and are advancing to the second-round.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have not made it past the first-round since 2004. That was the year Kevin Garnett was named MVP. Karl-Anthony Towns has had his struggles in his few postseason appearances but this year he was just great and shot the lights out from three-point range. Anthony Edwards was a killer in this series and is ecstatic to get his first playoff series win and happy for the team as well. Minnesota will now await the winner of the Denver Nuggets/Los Angeles Lakers series where the Nuggets hold a 3-1 series lead.
