Brunson Rejected Mavericks Extension Twice!
It is obvious now that the Dallas Mavericks made a huge mistake letting Jalen Brunson walk in free agency. Brunson was the 33rd overall pick in the 2018 draft, selected by the Dallas Mavericks. Fast forward, before the 2021-22 season began, the Mavericks offered Brunson a four-year, $55 million contract extension but Brunson's agent encouraged him to decline and seek more money. The Mavericks offered the same deal to Brunson after the trade deadline but declined it again knowing that he could earn more money.
In the 2022 playoffs, Brunson started to break out and showed why he was deserving of a big contract. Brunson and the Mavericks made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, first time the Mavericks reached that far in the playoffs since 2011 when they won the NBA championship. Brunson averaged 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists throughout the 2022 playoffs. After being eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in an interview that the Mavericks can offer Brunson "the most money" and expressed interest in re-signing him. In free agency Brunson and the Mavericks did not agree on an extension.
In that summer he would go on to sign a four-year, $104 million contract with the New York Knicks. In the 2023 playoffs he helped lead the Knicks to their first playoff series win for the first time in ten years. This season he was named an All-Star for the first time in his young NBA career. It is clear that the Mavericks made a huge mistake not being aggressive enough in bringing back Brunson and New York has a star.
