Spurs Complete ComeBack Win Over the Suns!
The Suns were once again without their starting backcourt of Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Booker has been out with an ankle issue since the season opener against Golden State and Beal has been sidelined with back spasms, has yet to play this season. So far there has been no timetable present as of how soon either guard may return and while it is still early into the season it could be a major concern down the road. In this game against the Spurs, the Suns led for majority of time and led by as many as 20 points. The Suns were hot from 3 point range, shooting 18 of 39 as a team (46%). However the young Spurs did not back down.
The Spurs could have easily put their head down as they were down by 20 points but they took the challenge head on and got back into the game. The Spurs headed into the 4th quarter down by 13 and in today's NBA that is reachable. The Spurs collectively worked hard on both sides of the court and as the game went on the lead only got smaller and smaller. In the final seconds Vassell put up a three, missed it but Wemby was in the right place at the right time as he grabbed the offensive rebound and made the putback dunk cutting the lead to only one. The Suns inbound the ball to Kevin Durant and after being trapped Keldon Johnson stripped the ball and made a contested layup to give the Spurs the lead with just 1.2 seconds left. Kevin Durant missed a contested fadeaway that could have won them the game but it does not change the fact that the Suns blew a 20-point lead.
This summer Devin Vassell and the San Antonio Spurs agreed on a 5-year, $135 Million rookie contract extension. The contract will kick in for next season and Vassell remains under contract until the 2028-29 season. In this game Vassell scored 18 points with 10 of them coming in the fourth quarter which was huge as the Spurs completed the comeback. When the Spurs needed a bucket they gave him the ball and he showed why he got a huge extension. These young Spurs are starting to grow up and they are not messing out, they are on the rise.
