Wood joins the LakeShow
There were some questions as to where Forward/Center Christian Wood might end up in Free Agency. Wood spend this past season with the Dallas Mavericks after being traded to Dallas in the summer of 2022 from Houston. Now Wood had a solid season with the Mavericks averaging 17 PPG, 7 RPG, 2 APG and 1 BPG. Wood primarily came off the bench although he did start in 17 games for the Mavericks averaging 20 PPG, 9 RPG and 2 BPG. While Christian Wood had himself a good season the Mavericks as a team had a terrible ending to their season by missing the playoffs and did not even qualify for the play-in tournament.
There was some indication that Christian Wood was not returning to Dallas heading towards Free Agency. The big man tested the markets and it did not go as most would expect. While many teams had shown interests in Wood, with the LA Lakers and the Miami Heat being the top candidates, Wood had not signed with a team which seemed strange to some fans in the NBA world. Until recently it was announced that Christian Wood is joining the Los Angeles Lakers on a 2-year, $5.7 Million contract, the second year is a player-option.
Part of the reason it took some time before Wood signed with a team was to see what might happen with the Damian Lillard/Miami Heat situation. So far the Portland Trail Blazers have shown no interest in trading Lillard to Miami and given how close we are now to training camp and preseason, it is clear that Wood could not just keep waiting. There would be no reason for Wood to sign with Miami without a Dame trade because the Heat already have their Power Forward and Center depth filled and it would be a bad business decision for Wood to sign with a team that he'd have a hard time to gain some minutes on. The Lakers had shown interests in Wood consistently through Free Agency and they finally land him. Wood has had some up and down seasons recently so it is going to be interesting to see how he does in a big LA media market where the spotlights are brighter than almost anywhere in the league.
