Tobias Harris Free Agency!
Tobias Harris is arguably the biggest free agent this summer who isn't an All-Star. After an early playoff exit to the New York Knicks after six games, it's looking like his time with the Philadelphia 76ers is over. Harris did not look at all like himself in the postseason, averaging only nine points per game. Matter of fact, in game six which was an elimination scenario for the Sixers, he scored zero points and played 29 minutes. It is almost absolutely certain that Harris will not return to Philadelphia and will explore free agency.
Harris just finished playing through a five-year, $180 million contract. To many, especially Sixers fans, it is crazy to be paying a player that much money who hasn't made an All-Star team or isn't really close to that level of status. Now Harris has always been reliable as a role player, in the last five years he's played 60 games or more, averaged 14 points per game or more, and shot nearly 40 percent from three-point range. He is a solid player however his production this year in the playoffs left a bad taste in the Sixers organization.
The Philadelphia 76ers definitely believe they made the wrong decision in not extending Jimmy Butler in the summer of 2019 and choosing Harris. Since Butler has been with the Heat, they've made the Eastern Conference Finals three times and the Finals twice. Meanwhile, the Sixers have repeatedly failed to make it past the second round. The Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, and Detroit Pistons are reportedly interested in signing the 13-season veteran forward and they have plenty of cap space to sign him to another heavy deal. With Harris' contract now off the books, Philadelphia will look to sign a true star to pair up with Joel Embiid and extend Tyrese Maxey.
