Paul George Leaving LA?
The Los Angeles Clippers were hoping to have won a championship by now when they signed Kawhi Leonard and traded for Paul George in the summer of 2019. Instead the Clippers have faced many disappointing early exits, having only made the Western Conference Finals once since this duo was formed, and the biggest thing is no championships. Now, Paul George's future with the Los Angeles Clippers is in question. George is on the final year of his current deal and as there was no contract extension agreed upon he will be a free agent this summer.
Kawhi Leonard signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension this season however there are other players the Clippers also have to worry about in terms of contracts. James Harden, who the Clippers acquired near the beginning of the season, is on the final year of his deal and is looking for a long-term max contract and Russell Westbrook can opt-out of his player-option and be a free agent this summer. Paul George, James Harden and Russell Westbrook are All-Stars and future Hall of Famers. It is going to be difficult for the Clippers to pay all three of those guys what they're worth.
The Clippers are still in the middle of their first-round series match up against the Dallas Mavericks. The Clippers recently lost game five and are down 2-3 in the series. If the Clippers fail to make it out the first-round then it would be expected for Paul George to explore free agency. The Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers are teams that are known to be interested and will make an attempt to sign Paul George. There is so much at stake for the Clippers if they fail to make a deep run in the postseason.
